Knowledge Nugget of the Day: Can you "brew" wine?

One of the reasons I enjoy translating is you never know what random knowledge you'd gain in the process of looking things up. For example, can you "brew" wine? As I am quite certain I have never seen beer in any TV shows depicting ancient China. And what exactly is the difference between "brewing" (beer) and simply "making" (wine)? 

It seems to me that the difference has to do with the technical process. Beer is boiled, steeped, mixed with wort, cooked and so on. Liquor is distilled and wine simply ferments. Unless you boil and sweeten the wine with spices and such. Then, wine is mulled.
Tea is brewed also because the process of infusing and boiling and steeping is part of what it is to brew.

Blog Entry of the Day: High Tide Heels

I think these heels will really help me make a fashion statement... I am sure my work will understand and appreciate the boldness.

Blog Entry of the Day: Just Because You Can, Doesn't Mean You Should

My original goal (set merely 3 days ago) was to have 1 random blog entry a day. Already missed my goal after 2 days as I was too tired to post yesterday, so here's my cheat make-up one. =D

Searching the web can sometimes feel like yanking out potatoes from the ground... one is link to another and link to another and so on and so forth, as I was browsing and trying to identify the original source of the wagon bed, I came across this great example of just-because-you-can-doesn't-mean-you-should.

I search as much as I could but couldn't identify the original source of this picture. The lower right hand corner said arthritis treatment, so I am going to go out on a limb and guess that the origin of it might be a promotional photo for arthritis pain... but I don't know, the WWW (world wide web) can be like the WWW (wild, wild west), it shall continue to amaze...

As I was research (for Cleaver) a specific part name for a carriage, I came across these wagon beds. Wouldn't I love to sleep in one of these so I can experience what's it's like to be an early settler. ;)

Knowledge Nugget of the Day: Dwarfs v Dwarves

The things that one can find on the internets have never ceased to amaze me. Check out this very extensive article on using dwarfs versus dwarves, on a U Penn website no less...

Knowledge Nugget of the Day: HUMPH

I guess now that I have devoted so much time in painstakingly creating the TOC and NAV bar (no shit I've spent an entire weekend and then some. on it), I might as well use the blog for it's originally-intended purpose -- blogging. :) I haven't decided whether there will be a theme to what I post... but probably just random stuff. If this was intended to be a blog from the get go instead of a translation site, it will probably be named Random Octopus instead of Fringe Octopus. :)

No promises, but I will try to keep most of my blog entries to be somewhat related to the translation side of my business... the operating word being "try"...

So, knowledge nugget of the day... I was looking up humph, and I didn't know analytics can be used like this:

If I had to guess, I'd imagine that was a word (can a sound be a word?) that only existed recently, perhaps in urban dictionary... but I'll be damned, all the way from 1800...

I guess the variation hmph is the made-up one...
